LG Washer and Fridge Error Codes Explained (OE, IE, UE and More)

LG's error codes are actually trying to help you. Here's what the most common ones mean in plain language, and which you can clear yourself.

LG washing machine display showing an error code

LG appliances have a reputation for reliability, and in my experience it's mostly deserved. But when something does go wrong, LG machines flash a two-letter error code at you, and to most people those codes are just intimidating gibberish. They shouldn't be. LG's codes are actually a built-in diagnostic system — the machine is telling you exactly which part of itself is unhappy. Once you can read them, half the mystery is gone.

Here's what the most common LG washer and fridge codes mean, in plain language, and which ones you can sort out yourself.

LG washing machine codes

OE — drain error

OE is the one I'm asked about most. It means the machine couldn't pump the water out within the expected time. The cause is almost always one of three things: a clogged drain pump filter (front bottom of the machine), a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a blocked standpipe. Clean the filter first — it's the most common culprit by far. The full walkthrough is in my guide to a washing machine that won't drain, and it maps directly onto OE.

IE — inlet/fill error

IE is the opposite of OE: the machine isn't filling fast enough. Check that the water tap behind the machine is fully open, the inlet hose isn't kinked, and the small mesh filter where the hose meets the machine isn't clogged with sediment. With our water lines, that little screen blocks up more often than you'd expect.

UE — unbalanced load

UE means the drum couldn't balance the load to spin safely. Usually it's a bulky single item or a load bunched to one side — open it, spread the laundry out, and restart. Persistent UE on balanced loads can mean the machine isn't level or the suspension is worn.

dE — door error

dE (or dE1/dE2) means the door isn't locking. Check nothing's caught in the seal and that the door is fully shut. If it keeps showing, the door lock assembly likely needs replacing — a standard part.

LE — motor/locked error

LE points to the motor being overloaded or locked — sometimes from severe overloading, sometimes a sign of a motor or hall-sensor fault. Try a smaller load first; if it persists, it needs testing.

tE — temperature sensor error

tE relates to a heating or temperature sensor fault. This one needs a technician with a meter.

LG refrigerator and dryer codes

LG fridges and dryers use their own codes, but the principle is the same — they isolate a system.

  • On a fridge, codes often relate to sensors or fan faults. If your LG fridge isn't cooling despite a working display, the diagnosis follows the same path as any fridge — fans, defrost, airflow — which I cover in fridge not cooling but the light is on.
  • On a dryer, a heat-related code or simply no heat usually points to the vent, thermal fuse, or heating element, exactly as in dryer not heating.

Should you keep using a machine that's showing a code?

No — and this is the most important point in this whole guide. An error code is a protective stop. The machine has detected a problem and halted to avoid damaging itself. If you keep forcing it to run, you can turn a small, cheap problem — like a blocked filter throwing OE — into a burnt-out pump or a damaged board. Clear the simple causes the code points to. If it comes straight back, stop and have it looked at.

A note on resetting

Many minor codes clear with a simple reset: switch the machine off at the wall, wait a minute, and power it back on. This clears transient glitches, including ones caused by our frequent power cuts. If the code returns immediately after a reset, it's a real fault, not a glitch.

When to call

Call when a code returns after you've handled the obvious causes, when you get a sensor or motor code (tE, LE) that needs metering, or when you simply don't have the time to chase it. LG parts are available, and most of these faults are affordable, well-defined repairs once the code has told us where to look.

If your LG washer, fridge, or dryer is flashing a code at you across Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town or nearby, reach out. Tell me the code when you call — it helps me arrive with the right part in hand.

Frequently asked questions

OE is a drain error — the machine can't pump the water out in time. Check the drain filter (bottom front), the drain hose for kinks, and that the standpipe isn't blocked. A clogged pump filter is the most common cause.

No. The code is a protective stop. Running it repeatedly can turn a small problem — like a blocked filter — into a burnt-out pump or board. Clear the simple causes; if the code returns, have it looked at.
